2025 Wyndham Championship–Tournament Preview

The PGA TOUR’s regular season wraps up in Greensboro with the 2025 Wyndham Championship, hosted July 30–Aug. 3 at Sedgefield Country Club — a proud member of the McConnell Golf portfolio. As the final stop before the FedExCup Playoffs, the Wyndham offers high drama and career-defining stakes amid one of the Tour’s most tradition-rich settings. The stellar field includes 24 of the top 50 in FedExCup points, 43 of the top 70 in FedExCup points and 21 of the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings (as of July 26).

“This field has to be our strongest in the last 20 years,” said Executive Director Mark Brazil. “It’s about making the top 70 and advancing into the FedExCup Playoffs. It’s also about moving into the top 10 for the $40 million Comcast Business Tour Top 10. There’s a lot at stake at Sedgefield.”

Tournament History

First played in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open, the Wyndham Championship is the oldest professional golf tournament in North Carolina. Since 2008, it has called Sedgefield home—one of only two Donald Ross-designed courses currently used as a regular PGA TOUR venue. Notable past champions include Sam Snead (a record eight times), Byron Nelson, Seve Ballesteros, Davis Love III, and more recently, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker and Lucas Glover.

Positioned as the final event before the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the Wyndham often delivers drama as players jockey to crack the top 70 in the standings or improve seeding. The tournament has also become known for the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 bonus race and its commitment to showcasing rising stars and established names alike.

The 85th Wyndham Championship delivered drama, heartbreak and a breakthrough victory for England’s Aaron Rai, who clinched his first PGA TOUR win with a birdie on the 72nd hole.
But it was Max Greyserman’s painful collapse that defined last year’s chaotic 36-hole finale.

Greyserman held a commanding four-shot lead after an eagle at No. 13, but a quadruple-bogey on 14 and a double at 16 derailed his run. Rai, meanwhile, stayed steady, finishing with a bogey-free 64 and clinching the win in near darkness with a clutch 7-iron and 6-foot birdie putt on the last. The win propelled him into the top 25 in FedEx Cup points and secured his first Masters invitation.

Heavy rain from Tropical Storm Debby postponed Thursday’s opening round, forcing 36 holes on Sunday. Sedgefield superintendent Chad Cromer and his team earned praise for restoring playability, with preferred lies in effect the rest of the week.

Alex Smalley

Beau Hossler and Greyserman both flirted with history, each carding rounds of 60. McConnell Golf was well represented with members Alex Smalley, Lucas Glover, Akshay Bhatia and Chesson Hadley in the field. The Pro-Am included a highlight pairing: the McConnell brothers with Jordan Spieth and Joel Dahmen, with John McConnell caddying for his son Alex.

Surprise, surprise … the defending champion LOVES Sedgefield

To the surprise of no one, defending Wyndham Championship winner Aaron Rai is a big fan of Sedgefield and its classic Donald Ross design. He believes strategy both off the tee and around the greens will be key again in 2025.

“First and foremost, it’s pretty demanding off the tee, and I think the penalty for missing fairways is pretty high,” he said during last Friday’s virtual media day. “Even though the rough isn't extremely long, but with the Bermuda grass and with the green complexes, you lose enough control where it can become very difficult to score. And having Bermuda grass and grainy grass around the greens — if you're missing greens, it can become quite difficult to consistently get up and down and keep the round going. So, I think there's a big premium on driving it well.”

Local Ties

Many North Carolina and former ACC stars will be teeing it up. A longtime Raleigh-area resident and early McConnell Golf Junior Scholarship recipient, Akshay Bhatia turned professional in September 2019 at age 17 and notched wins at the 2023 Barracuda Championship and the 2024 Valero Texas Open.

Fellow Raleigh resident Ryan Gerard also made the Barracuda Championship his first TOUR title two weeks ago and will join former UNC teammates David Ford and Ben Griffin in the field. One of the top collegiate players in UNC history, Ford turned professional this spring after winning the 2025 Fred Haskins and Jack Nicklaus Awards and finishing atop the PGA TOUR University rankings. Meanwhile Chapel Hill native Griffin bagged his first two PGA TOUR victories this season and nearly added a third at The Memorial. Raleigh resident and member at The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation, Chesson Hadley, tees it up at the Wyndham for his 14th career start at the tournament. Andrew Novak, born in Raleigh, teamed with Griffin to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans one week after losing in a playoff at the RBC Heritage. Rising Auburn junior Jackson Koivun, who grew up in Chapel Hill, is currently the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world.

Keegan Bradley

Former Duke Blue Devil Max Greyserman returns to Sedgefield fresh off his 2024 runner-up finish, while Sedgefield member and fellow Blue Devil Alex Smalley grew up attending the Wyndham. The NC State Wolfpack will be represented in the field by Raleigh native Stephen Franken. Western Carolina alum J.T. Poston returns to the site of the Hickory native’s first PGA TOUR win — the 2019 Wyndham Championship – as does 2011 champion Webb Simpson who will be making his 17th Wyndham start as the tournament’s all-time money leader.

A Loaded Field of Past Champions

J.T. Poston (2019) and Webb Simpson (2011) headline 10 past champions in the field, including Brandt Snedeker (2008/2017), Camilo Villegas (2014), Si Woo Kim (2016), Jim Herman (2020), Kevin Kisner (2021), Tom Kim (2022), Lucas Glover (2023) and Aaron Rai (2024).

Ryder Cup Preview

United States Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley makes his fourth Wyndham Championship start and is joined by vice captains Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker and Gary Woodland. Playing to secure a spot on the American squad, Ben Griffin, Keegan Bradley, Andrew Novak, Lucas Glover, Cameron Young, Tony Finau, Denny McCarthy, Akshay Bhatia and Michael Kim are all in the Top 25 of the U.S. standings.

European stars Robert MacIntyre and Matt Fitzpatrick are set to compete after both posted top-10 finishes at The Open Championship. MacIntyre (2025 U.S. Open runner-up) and Fitzpatrick (2022 U.S. Open champion) are likely contenders for Team Europe along with Danish twins Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard in the upcoming Ryder Cup, adding international firepower to an already strong Wyndham field.

Hideki Matsuyama

Other Fan “Faves”

Jordan Spieth returns to Sedgefield as one of the game’s most beloved stars, bringing a mix of Texas grit, short-game magic and major championship pedigree. A former FedExCup champion and three-time major winner, Spieth’s history at the Wyndham includes a near-miss playoff loss in 2013 and strong ties to the club dating back to his junior golf days. Fellow Masters champions Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama add global star power.

Max Homa and Rickie Fowler also bring crowd appeal to Sedgefield. Homa, a U.S. Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup veteran, returns for his first Wyndham start since 2017. Fowler, a six-time PGA TOUR winner and perennial fan favorite, is back for his fourth appearance — and remains one of golf’s most recognizable figures.

New Fan Amenities Debuting in 2025

From the ultra-popular “Wyndham Rewards Earner Card Club” behind No. 17 green to new fan zones and culinary offerings, the 2025 edition promises an enhanced spectator experience in the heart of the Triad.

Fan-favorite hospitality zones return in 2025, including Margaritaville at the Wyndham, the Sunbrella Comfort Zone at the 12th green, and the Wine Deck overlooking the 17th fairway. Other staples like Tito’s Golf Club and the Truist Fan Pavilion promise a fun, shaded way to beat the Carolina heat.

This year’s tournament introduces three new on-course attractions: the CELSIUS Greenside Terrace, the Fever-Tree Cocktail Clubhouse, and the Twist & Mist Zone. Located around the ninth and 10th greens, these shaded, refreshing venues offer fans a place to cool off, enjoy handcrafted drinks, and follow the FedExCup drama up close.
